Friday Feature: Haley Thomas

Friday Feature: Haley Thomas

Haley Thomas is the wife of head football coach James Thomas at Houston High School in Germantown Tennessee. We have 2 children, 8 year old daughter and 5 year old son. My husband and I are both graduates of Houston High School (but not high school sweethearts) and he teaches PE and I teach special education.

What is your favorite part of this lifestyle?
  • The players! I love watching the guys grow in their journey throughout their high school careers not just athletically but overall as humans. I enjoy working with the players in the school setting to help them navigate their school work, develop relationships with their teachers and get involved with the great things HHS has to offer.
What is your LEAST favorite part of this lifestyle?
  • I am actually not a big fan of the off-season. I have found over the years that there is so much that has to be done and planned during the off-season with scheduling, ordering uniforms and equipment, booster club, financial planning and recruiting which creates more stress and unpredictable situations. None of which are actually about X’s and O’s!! I would much rather be in season with a routine schedule that looks the same week to week and all the stress is about actual football.
What is one item you can't live without that makes this life easier?
  • My support people! My parents and mother-in-law help with the kids and managing the day-to-day household stuff. And my teacher friends are super supportive as well and it is just crucial to have all of those people in my life.
What is your go to concession stand order or must have snack?
  • Peanut M&M’s
What is the craziest thing you have survived due to this lifestyle?
  • During the last week of regular season, my daughter’s earring got imbedded in her ear and the hole started growing over it immediately. The doctor had to surgically remove it. And then 24 hours later (barely), my son fell on the playground at school and busted his head open and needed stitches. I thought my health insurance was going to cancel us!
What is one thing you would go back and tell your younger self?
  • There is no such thing as a conventional marriage, it looks different for everyone and being in love doesn’t look the same for everyone.
